Original cast member Cass Morgan is headed back to the Broadway company of Memphis as Mama for a two-month run beginning December 15. Nancy Opel will take a leave of absence from the production after the December 11 performance to appear in David Bryan and Joe DiPietro’s The Toxic Avenger at Houston’s Alley Theater. Opel is expected to return to Memphis in February 2012.
In addition to Memphis, Morgan has appeared on and off-Broadway in Mary Poppins, Ring of Fire, Beauty and the Beast, Capeman, The Human Comedy, Pump Boys and Dinettes (which she also co-wrote), Hair, The Immigrant, Floyd Collins, Violet and Merrily We Roll Along.
Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun (Adam Pascal) fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer (Montego Glover). The show won four 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and continues its run at the Shubert Theatre.
